English

In Iran's contemporary history, the two elite currents of the clergy and the intelligentsia have played pivotal roles in shaping political, social, and cultural developments since the early Qajar era. Although the clergy initially held greater influence due to their historical background and structural position, the intellectual movement eventually emerged as a modern, rising force. The interaction and confrontation between these two currents—particularly regarding modernity and Iran's fundamental transformations—constitute a central theme for understanding contemporary history and, specifically, the Islamic Revolution.
Through a case study of the book *An Analytical Introduction to the Islamic Revolution of Iran* by Mohammad Rahim Eyvazi and Mohammad Javad Herati, this research seeks to determine whether the work successfully elucidates the dichotomy between intellectuals and the clergy within the context of Iran's contemporary history—thereby facilitating a better understanding of the Islamic Revolution—or if it suffers from shortcomings. The findings indicate that while the authors attempted to derive two distinct models—"religious transcendentalism" and "progressive pseudo-Westernism"—from this dichotomy with the aim of public education and conceptual simplification, they fell short of their analytical objectives. This failure stemmed from the lack of a coherent central idea, a reductionist approach to explaining the movements, a failure to articulate their underlying intellectual foundations, and a relative disregard for historical evidence. The study employs a critical qualitative content analysis approach. The unit of analysis is the aforementioned book (Eyvazi and Herati, 2023 edition), and all its chapters have been critically analyzed based on five criteria: historical accuracy, comprehensiveness, theoretical coherence, narrative balance, and adequacy of sources.
